Hello, I’m David J Levene, an author, a YouTuber, and a blogger.  

As well as writing novels, I have a particular passion for the Legendarium of JRR Tolkien. In 2020 I launched a youTube series called Tolkien Untangled, which explores the deep lore and complex locations that Professor Tolkien built. In this series I break down the histories of Middle-earth, explore characters (both familiar and lesser known), and examine some of the differences between Tolkien’s writings and Peter Jacksons movie adaptations.

For my day job, I worked as a pirate performer at a pirate-themed tourist attraction, where I played the role of Redbeard (the picture to the right was my ‘work uniform’).

The Golden Age of piracy is something I’ve always found fascinating. I studied history at the University of London, and I even wrote my final dissertation on the relationship between pirates and New World capitalism.

In 2017, I began a Masters degree in creative writing at London South Bank University. It was during this time that The Buccaneers’ King first began to take hold in my mind.

Since finishing my debut novel, I’ve busily begun working on a sequel (focusing on a different historical pirate in a different part of the world), and I’ve also written a book of short stories entered around the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. I can’t wait to share these projects in the future!
